When the holidays roll around, my family does not mess around with regular old meals like some people. We feast!!!!
You look at that thing and you can’t help but think: This dude is ... not ... playing ... around.
This grill, I mean … you gotta see it. I swear that thing is the size of a studio apartment in some cities.
When I went out to Southern California to play ball, my dad didn’t even bat an eye about how far away it was from home. He just went on doing his thing and would tow his massive grill all the way across the country from Illinois so he and my mom could tailgate before our games.
He never complained about it. Not for a second. He loved it! And it made any tailgating trips after that seem like child’s play. When I got into the league, and our home games were only a four-hour car ride from St. Louis, it was like a gift to that man. That’s like nothing for him and my mom.
And my mom … I mean, she just immediately makes anyone and everyone feel at home when you’re around her. You feel … loved.
A lot of people know that my mom fought breast cancer back when I was in college, and how much I was affected by her battle.

People often ask me if I feel like things are different this time of year since my mom had her cancer scare. And in all honestly, I really don’t.
My parents raised me to always be appreciative and grateful for everything I had in life, and that definitely always included family. I have always been thankful for any time I have been able to spend with my mom and dad — and, really, with everyone I love.
And when the holidays roll around, everything just kind of comes together for our family. You know what I mean? My mom and dad both go all out in preparing everything for our family to eat. My mom does the traditional baked ham with all the sides. And while she’s doing that my dad will be out back on the grill.
I love everything they cook, but my favorite is probably my mom’s honey ham — I don’t know what she uses to make it so good, so sweet, but it has me hungry right now even just thinking about it.
Most holidays my brother and sister and their families join in the fun, along with tons of uncles and aunts and cousins — folks come in from Wisconsin, Texas, all over the place — and we all basically do two things.
The first one, as I’m sure you can probably guess is … we eat!
But beyond that, we just sit around and laugh and tell stories.
I always love hanging in the background during these gatherings — just kind of pulling up a chair and listening to everything that’s going down. You know what I mean? You really just cannot beat that. Everyone together, laughing, enjoying the company, and sharing the love with those you love most.
My dad was the talk of the East St. Louis Pop Warner football world for sure — out there tailgating at these kids’ games with his own secret sauce….
And a big ol’ smile on his face.
Thinking back on those days now, as a grown man, I realize that that’s where I get my talkative side out there on the field ... from my dad.
In order to explain to you how the Jacksons do holiday gatherings, I gotta take you back a quick second.
And I gotta talk about food.
Because for the Jacksons, family and good food … well, those two things just go together. They’re basically inseparable.
That connection goes back decades with our family, but for me it all started in my Pop Warner days, when I was still super little. On those game day weekends, my dad would get in his truck and haul this huge grill over to the field so he could host these epic tailgate parties for all the players and parents.
And my dad, man ... he just loves spending time with everyone. It’s not even like you gotta be family. He’s literally nice to every single person he meets.
I’ll walk up on the BBQ and see him hugging someone, or talking to someone for like five minutes straight, and think, Hmm, who is that? It’s gotta be someone from his family. But then it’s like … nope! I’ll ask my dad about it and he’ll tell me, “Son, I’m not even sure who that was. But he was a really nice guy!” That’s just my dad. What can I tell you? That's him to a T. He treats everyone like family.
And at the end of the tailgate you'll see him giving the leftovers away to everyone in the parking lot. That’s one of his favorite things to do.
cancer.
I’ve talked quite a bit about her bravery and courage, and how proud I am of her for winning that fight. I’ve spoken about how much I love her and what a momma’s boy I am. But, I gotta say…. there are still so many wonderful things about my mom that I can’t accurately get across in words.
And one of the big ones is how her smile — her presence, really — can light up any room.
For me, as her son, I know that she always has my back. There’s never any doubt about that. Ever. And from a very young age I was blown away by how much love she constantly showed me. Every day as a kid I would wake up, and my mom would do my hair. She’d already have my clothes picked out and ready, and then we’d just spend that time together while she was doing my hair.
I’ll cherish those times forever.
